Hermann Kaufmann to receive the International Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award
The recipient of the international Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award 2010 is Austrian architect Hermann Kaufmann. The award, EUR 40,000 in size, is distributed by the Wood in Culture Association. The recipient was announced in Helsinki on 9 September 2010, and the award will be conferred at a gala event at the Sibelius Hall in Lahti on 10 September 2010.
‘Hermann Kaufmann continues the work of the generations before him. He builds of wood, sustainably and beautifully, with the people and for the people. The International Spirit of Nature Wood Architecture Award is a tribute to his career and work, the value of which extends over decades and borders,’ says the Chairman of the Jury, Professor, Architect Matti Rautiola in his statement on the selection grounds, and continues: ‘The perfection of detailing is admirable, based on functionality, durability and sensitive materiality, delight of the hand. This can only become true with seamless collaboration between the architect and the builders.’
Hermann Kaufmann was born in 1955 in the Vorarlberg village of Reuthe in Austria. He currently works in the area, close to his family, relatives and collaborators. Kaufmann studied architecture in Innsbruck and Vienna and in 1983 founded an office in Schwarzach together with Christian Lenz. He has taught in several universities and since 2002 acts as Professor of Architecture in Munich Technical University.
